The Petrel kayak plans are named after the storm petrel bird, believed by early sailors to walk on water. Just like its namesake, this DIY sea kayak is adept at navigating rough waters, able to gracefully move among the waves.

With a design that prioritizes responsiveness and lightweight construction, the Petrel is ideal for day trips in challenging conditions, but can also explore sheltered estuaries and secluded coves. Whether you're a larger paddler up to 200 lbs and 6+ feet tall or a petite kayaker, the Petrel's traditional Inuit-inspired design is sure to appeal to all skill levels. Derived from Nick's Night Heron designs but with added rocker and reserve buoyancy, the Petrel boasts a unique "transitioning" chine for optimal wave-pushing performance and smooth turning. The sleek deck shape, influenced by Greenlandic Inuit designs, provides ample knee room while keeping the overall deck height low.

This versatile design is perfect for day tripping, touring for several days, on open ocean or large lakes.

Printing Full Sized Boat Plans

Note: Our boat plans include full-sized drawings of the parts and forms needed to build the boat, as such they are best printed on a large format printer.

If you do not have access to a large format printer, visit Guillemot-Kayaks.com where we sell full-size hard copy of all these plans printed and ready to use. You may also try printing these by "tiling" using your own printer and taping together the large pages.
