During the late 19th century, canoes became a popular trend in the northern United States and Canada. J. Henry Rushton, known for his skill in constructing canoes and boats, utilized European lapstreak construction techniques instead of Native American birch bark canoes. One of Rushton's notable customers was wilderness writer George Washington Sears, known as "Nessmuk," who promoted the use of lightweight boats and equipment for wilderness travel.

At Nessmuk's request, Rushton built a 10-pound "Sairy Gamp" canoe. This design is based on a 10-foot double-paddle canoe, offering simplicity and versatility. By using strip-built construction, the designer was able to add features such as tumblehome near the gunwales for increased freeboard and structural rigidity.

The prototype, constructed with 1/8-inch hardwood strips, weighed around 15 pounds and was suitable for paddlers weighing approximately 150 lbs. For heavier users, the designer suggests the 12-foot Nymph.
