This sea kayak skeg plans package offers comprehensive, detailed instructions for building an efficient and reliable retractable skeg. Developed through years of experimentation and testing, this design has consistently proven its effectiveness and durability, even after 10 years of intensive use. It can easily be adapted to fit any sea kayak design, whether made of wood or composite materials.

Skeg Features:

  • Efficient Surf-Board Fin Design
  • Positive Low Profile Control
  • Fits Under Low Back Decks (5 1/2" [14cm] clearance)
  • No External Lines - No Tangling or Snagging
  • Virtually Jam and Kink Proof.
  • Professional Appearance

A retractable skeg allows for adjustable performance in your kayak. Though not always necessary, a well-designed kayak can benefit from the added level of control. This allows for both a playful and responsive kayak, as well as the ability to tighten tracking for challenging crossings.

Unlike many production skegs, this design has proven to be reliable, with features such as an offset placement to avoid sand and gravel, supported control cable to prevent kinking, and easy removal in case of an issue. This design was originally created for the Petrel, with a low back deck in mind. The cable enters from the front of the box, conserving deck height.

Printing Full Sized Boat Plans

Note: Our boat plans include full-sized drawings of the parts and forms needed to build the boat, as such they are best printed on a large format printer.

If you do not have access to a large format printer, visit Guillemot-Kayaks.com where we sell full-size hard copy of all these plans printed and ready to use. You may also try printing these by "tiling" using your own printer and taping together the large pages.
