The design of this kayak is based on the modified traditional Alaskan baidarka style, known for its speed and seaworthiness. While the traditional "iqyax" or single baidarka shape was used, this kayak utilizes a strip-building construction method for added potential.
This results in a "Aleut-like" or "Aleut-esque" design, without the traditional split bow and with a real transom rather than a complex traditional stern. The outcome is a low-volume, agile boat ideal for surfing and handling in crosswinds, though it may not be suitable for rough water conditions.
Building and paddling this kayak requires significant experience and skill, making it not recommended as a first kayak project. However, the effort will be rewarded with a beautiful and responsive kayak.
Included in the Plans:
- Eleven 24" x 36" [61cm x 91cm] Drawing Pages including: An overall drawing, a full size "stacked" form drawing showing all the forms and then all the forms drawn individually and at full size. Also included is a full size pattern for the cockpits.
- Aleutesque Building Notes: This design has a unique bow and stern treatment that is built differently than your average kayak. These notes will get you up to speed. These notes combined with the The Strip Built Sea Kayakbook provide all the instructions you should need.
- Kayak Building Notes: These notes provide supplemental information such as bill of materials for each design.
